Knitting in the new year

So, here I am winding down 2004 by finishing up some not-quite-finished knitting projects, and plotting starting some new ones in the new year. Here's the hat I just finished.

I started it on the plane back home to Arkansas on Christmas Eve, and I just sort of made it up as I went along. I had a different vision of a hat entirely when I started, but as many knitting projects do (at least for me) the concept wandered around and finished in a different place than originally intended. I just finished the leaves this evening. The groovy thing about this hat is that under the bottom leaf is a hole my ponytail can go through. I wear a ponytail pretty frequently and I get irked when it's hat weather and I have to smoosh my hair up under a snug little hat. It kills my 'do and then the hat's all lumpy too. This solved the problem with a little style I think. When I don't wear a ponytail I can just pull on my hat with the corsage on some jaunty angle or other. I totally dig this hat, and one of these days I'll post the pattern for it. It'll have to be soon I suppose, or I'll forget what I did and how, and it'll be like Grandma's spaghetti that has no known written recipe and all efforts to recreate it wind up with a close-but-not-quite-the-same end result.

New Year's Eve 2004

It's New Year's Eve again. Sigh. If I stay in I wish I was out, and if I go out I wish I had stayed in. Right now- 5:10 pm- I think I am going to stay in. Friends are going to a huge bash in San Francisco, but I don't really go in for big noisy crowds. And to be honest, I fall asleep at 10:00 pm on the dot, which is pretty early by most folks standards (even mine) and effectively puts me out of commission before the countdown. I'll probably just rent a movie and knit.
