Still sick
I'm still sick. So sick in fact that I called my mommy at 4:00 this morning to ask her if I should go to the doctor. My mom actually lives in Arkansas so it wasn't that early for her, and she was already on her way to work, according to my dad. My dad wisely told me that anytime I need to call my mom at 4:00am for medical advice it probably warrants a trip to the doctor. And here is where the comedy/drama of this story starts.I left a voice mail for my mom at her office since she didn't answer her cell phone. Mom called me back a few minutes later and got a complete medical history on me. Technically speaking this means she tells me all the times that I've been sick in the past, and occasionally will ask me what my current symptoms are. After she gathered up this important data she said she needed to analyze the situation and would call me back shortly. Usually this means consulting with the other nurses at work about whose kids/grandkids/husbands have been sick recently with similar symptoms, and What Did The Doctor Say About It? Today though I guess they were a little fired up about something because the diagnosis was much more dramatic than just "a bug," and those of you who know me will instantly know where I get my hypochondriac tendencies from.
Mom called me back at 4:53 to tell me that someone in Santa Clara County (where I live) has been diagnosed with Avian Influenza A (H5N1). I'm guessing that this someone who has recently arrived from Asia for the Lunar New Year festivites no doubt, since there are like only 56 people in the ENTIRE WORLD that have ever been diagnosed with this, all but one of whom are in Asia. Mom is worried I will contract it too. She forwarded the Centers for Disease Control report on it to me via email. Furthermore she insisted that I should be on the phone with my doctor to get myself put on the high-risk-must-always-get-a-flu-shot-before-anyone-else list because I get sick with "a bug" every year (whether or not I get a flu/ pneumonia shot, by the way). And yes, I should go see the doctor as soon as possible.
I spent the day moving back and forth between bed and the couch. I got some new cough medicine and that seems to be doing a much better job than the Nyquil. I hope to be a little better tomorrow. I didn't really even have the energy to knit today, and that's just not right. I was hoping to go to the Knitting Meetup tonight and get all the scoop on the Sally Melville class that Spinnity took at Stitches West this weekend, and enjoy the show-n-tell from everyone else that went. Sigh. Or should I say cough cough cough. I'm a little stoned from the Robitussin and fever so I do apologize for the rambling and disjointed nature of today's blog post. Maybe you will find some humor in it. I know I did.

OMG! your mom sounds like my mom! she gets me all freaked out all the time. I hope you feel better soon.
Oh man, I'm so sorry you've been sick. I've been slacking on my blog reading & had no idea. Boo for you.
I'm glad to hear you are feeling a bit better this week, and if I could just channel Mom for a sec... you will get better sooner if you get plenty of rest. Can't recommend the "up past your bedtime" lifestyle (speaking as a practitioner here..) while trying to get rid of chest cold/infection/bird flu. Sleep. Slug around. Don't plan too much.

- got the mom gene pretty bad
Well, here it is April, a little late to be commenting on this post, but (as I'm sure you've discovered) there were no cases of H5N1 in the US this year (so far).
Your mother was probably confused by a minor twist in this years ordinary flu epidemic. The vaccine for this year included the 'fujian' (spelling?) strain. When that strain got to Santa Clara County, it mutated slightly so that it was no longer prevented by the vaccine. Because it was no longer prevented by the vaccine against 'fujian', they gave this 'son of fujian' strain the name 'California'--which had some local health authorities knickers in a knot because they thought it should have been named the 'Santa Clara' strain.
Do cities or counties really want to have diseases named after them? Sheesh!
BTW, I don't have a blog account here but I do knit. Currently I'm working on a couple of Dale of Norway projects--a setesdal set for a baby shower in May and a nice feminine cardigan for myself, which should prove interesting because it's the first time I'm using a steek and it has crocheted edging, and I've never crocheted. (Fortunately I've found instructions for the crochet stitch on the web.)
Anyone know where to get size 1 circulars (near San Jose)? Knitting the baby-hat on double-points the whole time is irritatingly slow!
Funny you should reply to this posting this morning. Not only did I wake up with a cold, my mom called to let me know the latest and greatest infectious diseases going round. Her update included the status of the marburg outbreak in Angola, which as you know, is just a 40-hour trip from San Jose. It's good to have a mom that worries about me!
As far as the needles go, I would check at Knitting Arts in Saratoga. They've got a pretty good sized selection of needles. If you feel like venturing farther afield, I'd totally go to The Yarn Place in Capitola. They've got an awesome selection of needles, and their Inox Express needle prices are the same as or lower than most every place I've found on the internet, including eBay!
